Humour comes easy at the Blacksmiths. It is that sort of place. A large range dominates the small front bar. Beer pump clips and pewter mugs decorate the low-beamed ceiling. A cosy snug and two delightful dining rooms complete the interior. Bed and breakfast is available.
Loved equally by locals, walkers and other travellers it's a busy place. There are quiz nights, curry nights and outside the rack for muddy boots left by weary walkers is well used.
The food is good, but the Magic Crock Pot of homemade soup cannot be bettered. It heats in front of the open fire. Finish a bowl and mysteriously it fills again - splendid value for £2.65.
This is warm-hearted place, which welcomes families and makes well-behaved children feel as if they are part of the human race rather than alien beings. Situated in a delightful conservation village, nestling in the folds of a valley, it is surrounded by real countryside - with big skies and lots of fresh air.
I drank a Daleside Blonde, brewed in nearby Harrogate. A pale golden beer, with a crisp palate and hoppy aroma from the Centennial and First Gold hops, this beer has a distinctive lemony nose, combined with delicate mouth feel and a subtle aftertaste, to make it a wonderfully drinkable beer. What more could I ask for? A second.
