I always arrive at the best pubs on the wrong day, as a sign in the bar says free beer tomorrow.
Known locally as the Masonic, it is a fine place to eat and drink. It is much more than a business dependent on visitors to the friendly town of Gatehouse of Fleet, it is a pub for local people too. The ambition of the couple who run this friendly establishment is quite simple - to make it the best pub in the South West of Scotland. And the fact that it is Egon Ronay listed and has won awards for the quality of the real ale it sells, is testament to how much the owners Chris and Sue Walker have achieved since they bought the pub in 2003. The food is modern Scottish with an Asian twist - offering the very best of local eating including Galloway beef and loch scallops.
There is a choice of three distinctive eating areas, the solid Gaelic charm of the beamed bar, a contemporary restaurant with high-backed leather chairs and a wooden floor and the Mediterranean Conservatory. But this is more than just a fine restaurant, it is also a pub where it is possible to drop in for a pint, of locally brewed Masonic Boom made exclusively for the pub by Sulwath Brewers in Castle Douglas or perhaps one of the guest ales like Hook Norton's Old Hooky or Caledonian's Deuchars IPA.
