For this is a pub that sets and keeps the highest standards, as it should do for its owner Matt Jackson is no stranger to perfection as his other pub the Waterwitch, also in Lancaster was last year's Granada region winner. Through heart and hard work Mr Jackson has now surpassed the sublime standards set by last year's regional champion.
I remember the first time I sat in the bar at the Sun and Mr Jackson described how he had spent every evening for two weeks in this once down at heel failing boozer prior to buying it, trying to imagine what he could do so that "it could have its day again". Well the sun certainly shines for this pub now. It just oozes class - this is no cheap bling bling - it is the real thing. And it is real beers that underpin the success of this place and turn it into a proper pub and not a vertical drinking boozer.
Any customer daunted by the array of unknown beers on the bar need have no fears because a well-trained member of staff will normally talk you knowledgably through the beers offering samples if needed.
Like many truly great pubs it doesn't just offer the hospitality of a good bar, where you can sit alone with a drink and a newspaper or the company of loud friends, it has some superb bedrooms. Why do so many business travelers and tourists stay in anonymous motorway hugging hotels, when they could stay in a place like this?
The breakfasts are superb - and when in Rome (or Lancaster) do as the owner does - have a full English, with one of everything, the perfect start to the day.
