The Water Witch is last year's winner of the Perfect Pub Award and 12 months
away has not dimmed my enthusiasm for this remarkable pub nor have its standards
dropped one jot. There are not enough bars like this in the UK - modern, popular
and yet firmly based on selling real ale.
The building is a former canal company stable block which assumed its present name and use in 1978 when it became Lancaster's first true canal side pub. Wedged between the towpath and a retaining wall, it is very long and narrow. Decor is modern, but in complete harmony with the stone clad building.
Dining normally takes place on a mezzanine floor. As you enter the bar what
catches the eye of this pub, which is often busy with students on mobile phones,
is a range of eight hand pumps on the bar.
The knowledgeable staff will willingly offer a small sample to try so don't
be daunted by the choice. In addition there is an excellent range of wines
by the glass and whiskies.
If eating try the truly extraordinary cheese, cold meat, pâté and terrine
boards. If any parent has a child thinking of going to university, make them
put Lancaster on their wish list, it will give you a chance to try out this
pub.
