Big, bold and just a bit brash - the Porterhouse is a barn of a pub where you probably don't go for a quiet pint - you go to enjoy the company of loud friends, to eat, to drink and to experience the craic.
Situated close to many of London's theatres and some fabulous restaurants, it is a rambling, cavern of a bar, full of dark alcoves and intrigues on several different levels. It's a place to meet friends, lose them and find them again. The décor looks as if created by Heath Robinson after a glass or two of the suds, as large copper pipes sweep across the wall and an eccentric clock marks time over the main bar.
It describes itself as an Irish bar; well it sells 11 draft brews all from the Porterhouse microbrewery in Dublin - three stouts, three ales, three lagers and an idiosyncratic Weiss beer. The beers are anything but bland, non-pasteurised and for anyone with a group of friends who is unsure of what to try just order the sample tray of nine beers.
21-22 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7NA.
